MONO’s First Album Without Steve Albini Moves Toward Light

The Japanese instrumental group’s new album, *Snowdrop*, channels the late producer’s spirit through Brad Wood and a full choir and orchestra.

Twenty-five years after their debut, Japan’s MONO are still refining a sound that needs no lyrics to stir. Snowdrop arrives after the loss of longtime producer Steve Albini, who died shortly after completing work on OATH. The choice of Brad Wood — a friend of Albini’s, known for his work with the Smashing Pumpkins — signals continuity rather than reinvention. What emerges is not a record of mourning but one of measured radiance.

The title track opens with the classic MONO arc: two and a half minutes of patient guitar and keys before drums crash in with a euphoric swell.
