Oneohtrix Point Never releases “Dim Stars” single

The new two-track release pairs an original composition with an extended, previously exclusive version of a recent piece.

Oneohtrix Point Never has issued a new two track single, “Dim Stars.” The release serves as a concise, focused statement from Daniel Lopatin, arriving between his recent album “Tranquilizer” and a continuing series of live performances with visual artist Freeka Tet.

The title track is a slow moving study in texture. It builds from a foundation of granular, shifting tones, over which a simple, melancholic melodic phrase repeats and decays. The effect is one of controlled erosion, a piece that feels both composed and subject to elemental forces. It lacks the overt cinematic drama of some of his recent work, opting instead for a more interior and patiently detailed sound.

The single’s second piece, “For Residue (Extended),” offers a different kind of focus. Previously available only as a Japanese bonus track, this version elongates the original “Tranquilizer” composition into a more meditative form. The extension allows the listener to settle into its harmonic drift, emphasizing atmosphere over progression. It functions as a companion, a deeper immersion into a specific mood from his last album cycle.

Together, the tracks feel like a deliberate pause. They are less about introducing a new direction than about examining specific sonic materials with precision. The release coincides with Lopatin’s current European tour, suggesting these pieces may be reflections of his present performative headspace, where detail and immersion are paramount. For listeners, it’s a brief, potent dose of the artist’s singular approach to electronic atmosphere.
