Sparklmami Announces Debut Album ‘in this body’ for Verve

The Chicago artist will release her first full-length project on June 5th, previewed by the self-directed single ‘no te vayas’.

Sparklmami has set a release date for her debut album. The Chicago artist’s first full-length project, ‘in this body’, will arrive on June 5th through Verve Records and the slowplay imprint.

The announcement is paired with a new single, ‘no te vayas’. The track is built on a foundation of dusky, relaxed funk, a groove that feels both warm and meticulously crafted. Its accompanying visual, directed by Sparklmami, draws direct inspiration from Chicago’s DIY broadcast history.

“As an undergrad in my video art class, I was introduced to The Chicago Party,” she explains. “Basically a public access television talent show documenting Chicago arts in the mid-80s. I remember being so fascinated by not only the talent on the show, but feeling the DIY spirit that continues to carry Chicago culture forward.” That aesthetic informs the throwback style of the video, which also features a cameo from Andre Gibson of the city’s revered musical outfit Universal Togetherness Band.

The album title, ‘in this body’, suggests a project grounded in physical presence and personal narrative. For an artist emerging from Chicago’s rich lineage of soul and house, it points to a work rooted in embodied experience. The single’s blend of funk sensibility with a contemporary vocal delivery hints at the sonic territory she may explore.

Sparklmami’s move to a major label like Verve for a debut indicates a significant step, placing her within a legacy of vocal and compositional artistry. How she channels the DIY spirit she cites into a full-length statement will be the central question when ‘in this body’ arrives in June.
