The artist performed a series of shows in a Los Angeles high school auditorium, creating a deliberately small-scale setting for her new work.
Mitski has finished a five night residency in an unconventional Los Angeles venue, the auditorium of Hollywood High School. The shows presented material from her latest album in a deliberately intimate setting.
The production was minimal but specific. A projection of a swaying ocean washed the stage in shifting light, casting the performer in silhouette during songs like “The Deal.” The environment fostered a focused, communal atmosphere distinct from larger concert halls.
This residency continues a pattern for Mitski, who has recently favored more controlled performance environments over traditional touring. The choice of a school auditorium, a space inherently tied to local community and gathering, reframes the live album experience as something closer and more direct.
The run of shows underscores a current approach where scale is secondary to the specific mood and connection a space can enable.
