Alexia Jayy Wins The Voice, First Black Woman to Take Title

The singer’s victory in the show’s 29th season marks a historic first and secures coach Adam Levine his fourth win.

Alexia Jayy has won the 29th season of The Voice, becoming the first Black woman to win the competition in its 15 year history.

The 31 year old singer, who competed on Adam Levine’s team, secured the victory after a season of performances that drew from a classic soul and pop lineage, including songs by Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston. Her win also marks Levine’s first as a coach since season nine, tying him with Kelly Clarkson for the most wins in the show’s run.

Jayy marked the occasion with a performance at Los Angeles’s Blue Note jazz club. In a social media post, she called the experience unforgettable.

The result highlights a longstanding gap in the show’s record, shifting the narrative around a franchise that has often celebrated vocal prowess rooted in Black musical traditions without previously crowning a Black woman its champion.
