Taylor Swift Drops “I Knew It, I Knew You” for Toy Story 5

The new song, written with Jack Antonoff, draws on Jessie’s storyline and Swift’s own childhood nostalgia, arriving alongside a tightly run merch strategy.

Taylor Swift released “I Knew It, I Knew You” at midnight, a song made for Toy Story 5 with Jack Antonoff. His Bleachers bandmates play on the track. Promotional materials called it a return to her country roots. It isn’t, really. The song is attached to Jessie, the cowgirl character, and Swift has made it clear she understood the role fast.

Director Andrew Stanton praised the fit, saying the song felt inevitable from the first listen. Swift told her own version of the story earlier this week, writing that she saw an early cut of the film and wrote the track immediately after. “I fell instantly in love with Toy Story 5 when I was lucky enough to see it in its early stages, and I wrote this song as soon as I got home from the screening,” she said. The language in that quote does more work than the press release, framing the song as a personal throwback rather than a pivot.
