Taja Cheek returns with a 13-track follow-up to I Killed Your Dog, out August 14 on Mexican Summer, and a lead single that moves from coiled calm to explosive release.
Taja Cheek has announced her third L’Rain album. fata morgana arrives August 14 on Mexican Summer, the follow-up to 2023’s I Killed Your Dog. Created with longtime collaborators Ben Chapoteau-Katz and Andrew Lappin, the record’s 13 tracks extend Cheek’s instinct for layered, unpredictable songcraft.
The lead single “soulless cycle” opens at a low, murmuring hum—Cheek’s voice spiraling through a sparse landscape. Then it erupts. Guitars and drums swallow the mix while her vocal stays steady at the center, calm amid the surge. Director Mackai Sharp’s video mirrors that push-pull, a visual stream-of-consciousness that never quite settles. The song’s tension is its point, not a resolution.
A full tracklist and a small run of summer dates accompany the announcement: June 25 at Knockdown Center in Queens with Tortoise, and June 26 at Solid Sound Festival at MASS MoCA. Cheek also appears on a Central Park panel about the state of indie rock on June 24, alongside Ronen Givony, Jenn Pelly, and Vagabon.
