Arca Announces New Album XXXXX, Livestream Set for July 23

Arca will release a new album, titled XXXXX, on July 31 via XL. The project was originally conceived as a mixtape in the vein of her 2013 and 2020 releases &&&&& and @@@@@, but according to a press release, it “revealed itself as an album.” Ahead of the full arrival, a livestream directed by Daniel Sannwald and styled by Akeem Smith will premiere on July 23 at 9:30 p.m. CEST via YouTube and Twitch.

That presentation—unpunctuated and relentless—feels consistent with the statement XXXXX makes about resisting automatic writing cycles. “It seems playful, also mischievous, to interrupt that autopilot,” Arca noted in a statement. The release follows her four-part KiCK series, which closed last year with volumes ii through iiiii. Where those records escalated density and noise, XXXXX borrows from the mixtape format’s looser, more diaristic logic. No singles or track previews have been shared so far, leaving the livestream as the first full glimpse of how Arca chooses to step outside established patterns.
