The elusive duo quietly uploads the track “Tape 05,” their first new material since 2013’s ‘Tomorrow’s Harvest.’
Boards of Canada have broken a thirteen year silence with a new piece of music. The track, titled “Tape 05,” appeared without announcement on the duo’s official YouTube channel.
Its arrival follows a week of cryptic activity from the group and their label Warp, including reports of mysterious VHS tapes mailed to fans and posters appearing in cities like Tokyo and London. The three minute instrumental is characteristically analog and atmospheric, built around a dusty, looping melody and submerged rhythms.
The release marks the first new music from the pioneering Scottish electronic act since their 2013 album ‘Tomorrow’s Harvest.’ No context was given for “Tape 05,” leaving its purpose as a standalone work or a hint of a larger project entirely open to interpretation.
